Builder’s hardware is a term used in our industry when talking about commercial door hardware. Some examples that fall into this category are but not limited to: Butt Hinges, Continuous Hinges, Cylindrical Locksets, Mortise Type Locksets, Deadbolts, Exit (panic) Devices, Door Closers, Automatic Door Operators, Kick Plates, Push & Pull Plates, Thresholds, Weatherstrip, and other door related hardware items.

Because of various “code requirements”, there may be several options for hanging, securing, and controlling a door or there may only be one option.

Some of the most common codes that can effect what type of hardware you can use on a door are;

NFPA 80 – Standards for Fire Doors & Window

NFPA 101 – Life Safety & Egress Codes

Michigan Building Code

ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act
